POLITICS AND THE LAST JUDGMENT

It’s the Sunday of the Last Judgment, Meatfare Sunday, on the Eastern Orthodox Church liturgical calendar. The Gospel is the familiar “parable of the sheep and the goats” from Matthew 25. Preachers and writers on this passage, at least in Western Christianity, usually take an individualistic approach to it, ie, ‘You (singular) visit the sick, clothe the naked, feed the hungry, etc.’

To that let me add that what is envisioned is a gathering before the Lord of “all the nations” (panta ta ethne) which are separated like a shepherd separates his sheep from goats. The nations which feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, entertain foreigners, visit the sick and prisoners, will be arrayed on His right and share His Glory. The nations which do not, will be arrayed on His left, where His Glory will be experienced as burning fire.

Does your nation feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, entertain foreigners, visit the sick and prisoners?
