Complex math among ancient indigenous

So complex I can barely follow this 16-minute talk (blog post linking to video with pictures; maximize video if possible to see the pictures), maybe since I only got to Algebra II, junior year of high school!  But fascinating!  Even roots of computer science.

The guy says informing young minorities in the U.S. of this fact improves their performance in math and science.  Very cool!

(I just hope he got that African Native priest’s permission to share with the whole world what he was reluctant to share with him at first on account of its cultural / religious sacredness….)

Kaopectate ain’t kaopectate anymore

I thought I posted about this a long time ago, but apparently not.  A few years ago the maker of Kaopectate took out the kaolin and pectin that gave the name to this old, effective anti-diarrhea product.  Instead they put in Bismuth salicylate, better known as Pepto-Bismol … but they kept the Kaopectate name!!!  Even my doctor was pee’d!  (I have IBS-Diarrhea, remember.)

On the Web there were suggestions about making your own concoction with clay and chalk, but with all the runs I already get, I wasn’t gonna risk all the little bugs you can get in there!  This in part led me to Paregoric, as I’ve said, which is a huge help, but not perfect.

There oughta be a law against such blatant deception in business / advertising by one of our sovereigns’ (States) corporations.

Dobson: Obama Distorts Bible. But Dobson distorts Obama!

Oh, I see, it’s coming down to a sectarian battle now?!

Fortunately for America, most Christians by definition don’t consider Conservative Evangelical Protestants authoritative on the subject!!!  Only a quarter of Americans belong to these sects, ie, less than half of Protestants.

BTW, when Dobson refers to “the traditional understanding of the Bible” on “Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply,” he means his tradition.  There are other Protestant sects that disagree with him on OT laws!

Obama’s point that people who base their politics on their religion – like me! – need to try to appeal to people who won’t necessarily buy their religion’s interpretations, isn’t persecuting anybody or denying anybody’s rights, it’s simply good advice!  Dobson distorts Obama!!!!!

Is McCain a Christian Zionist like Hagee?

That’s the worry of English journalist Victoria Clark, author of the recent book Allies for Armageddon.

Will McCain try to do what W. has (so far) failed to do, and “bring back Jesus“?!?!?!  (Yes, it’s total heresy – see here for a little info – but that doesn’t stop them from screwing the rest of the world!)

Gas gouging

How come gas prices at the pump seem to react immediately to predicted bad weather in the Gulf of Mexico, uncertainty in the Middle East or Venezuela, even news reports of increases in barrel prices?

What’s wrong with that?  When you hear “price per barrel,” that’s in the oil futures market.  Those prices shouldn’t make it to the consumer for a good part of a year, the time it takes to get bought at that price at the wellhead or wherever, across the oceans, through refining, and transporting to your gas station.  Plus, those futures are 3, 6, 9 months out.  ISTM somebody’s exploiting modern information overload for unfair profit.  I don’t wanna tax their windfalls; I wanna END them!!!!!

As for the other causes, they should have a delayed effect too.  They don’t.  Reminds me of the joke about PBS, “Petroleum’s British Subsidiary”!!  Except now it’s ALL the media!

Mixed-Blood Indigenous

Poignant reflections about being “half-caste” as they call it Down Under (British influence), from a Suite 101 columnist and a big Aussie historian who discovered himself part-Aboriginal.

Do we really know McCain?

McCain is touting America’s familiarity with him over Obama.  I guess it’s the devil you know over the devil you don’t know?!!  If that’s the best he has against the Democratic nominee, this’ll be a slam dunk!

But seriously, does the McCain America knows really exist?  The “maverick” buddy of the Religious Right and Bush/Cheney?  The “maverick” beloved of the MSM who votes mostly with the Hard Right?

Who’s zoomin’ who, Senator?  America is having the wool pulled over its eyes, I think.

I hate rollover pop-ins!

Until we all get touch-sensitive computer screens that remove the need for mice (tabbing takes forever in today’s web pages!), DO NOT intrude on necessary mouse movements to links we want, with pop-in ads we don’t want, that cover-up content, and might not go away the way they promise to (eg, you click on “collapse,” and they just stay there!)!  When is a rollover NOT a rollover?: When it’s a roll-towardstowards something OTHER THAN THE AD!!!!!  DON’T make us have to steer the mouse around all ads like Magellan trying to circumnavigate the globe; that’s not “textured websurfing” that anybody wants!!!!!  Nevermind when the ad loads under the mouse, so you didn’t even get a chance to roll-away!!!

Or else, give us a way to block pop-ins, just like we had to block pop-ups!!!!!  (Nevermind that all the pop-up blockers in the world can’t seem to block all the pop-ups.  What’s wrong with this picture?!!!)

ROLLOVER THIS!!!!!

How to solve Israel’s Iran problem

Israeli leaders – in the midst of a growing domestic scandal, interestingly – threaten to attack Iran, which would be an act of war and perhaps provoke the holocaust – if they will pardon the expression – that they claim to want to avoid.

They’d take alot of wind out of Iranian sails if they just made peace with their neighbors, especially the Palestinians.

This wouldn’t be “appeasement.”  Letting Israel hang on to the Illegally-Occupied Territories of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Golan Heights, and attack her neighbors Lebanon and Syria with impunity and out of all scale to the problem that was emanating therefrom, is appeasement.  Letting Israel continue to make innocent Palestinians’ lives hell on earth, and not pay for the excessive devastation in Lebanon, is appeasement.  Letting Israel perch the whole planet on the precipice of World War III / Global Jihad / World Crusade for its own shortsighted, misguided, narrow policies and international noncooperation and dictation, is appeasement.  Bu’ushist threats of a nuclear first-strike against a non-nuclear Iran, besides illegal in themselves, are an appeasement of Israel.  New French “neocon” threats of a similar nature are shockingly disappointing for this formerly-responsible member of the world community, as well as appeasement and “red meat” for their “base” in France and the U.S.  US and French disingenuousness is similarly appeasement.

Iran is most definitely not “a direct threat to the national security of the United States and our allies,” because we have no treatied allies under Iranian “threat.”  Such a statement is ignorant of the situation at International Law as it currently stands.  Iran is a nation of more than 70 million population, a modern State and economy, and a major world culture.  It cannot be simply ordered around like some tribal sheikdom or Third-World Banana Republic.  Bu’ushists bluster in perfect Middle Eastern fashion, while “the West” claims to be heir to a better-developed international legal and diplomatic tradition.  Bush thus gives the lie to Western claims, makes Mideasterners nervous, and they would reasonably feel the need to prepare to defend themselves against violations of their territorial sovereignty, even if they weren’t making such preparations, as Iran, and US and international intelligence estimates claim they are not.  (Of course, reason is not something the Bu’ushists are known for, as they belittle The Reality-Based Community!)

The real rogue states in this process so far are Israel, the US, and now France also.

America’s King’s Birthday

I missed it, but June 4 is the birthday of ‘British America’s’ *  last actually-reigning Sovereign, King George III, as currently recounted on the Gregorian Calendar.  (He was born under the Old Calendar.)  He was ill-advised regarding Ireland, like most of his predecessors and successors, and a little delusional regarding America.  But insofar as America suffered at all – and not just one in five, or fewer, the rebels with vested socioeconomic interests (ie, not in the Common Good) – ISTM it was mostly owing to the immoderation of homeland politicians’ legislation, eg, a tax on every damn piece of paper?!!!

The late Marc Chaitlin commemorated his birthday from a U.S. monarchist and constitutional-legitimist perspective shortly before his own passing (text-search “birthday” – without quotation marks – here).

God be good to both of them … and to the victims of George’s politicians.

Buffalo is/are good for you

If you ‘must’ eat meat, that is.  Just don’t burn down the house trying to cook it, like I almost did the other day!  Carbonized hockey puck isn’t as pleasant a buffalo burger as it was once I got the hang of it (sort of) this morning (Chaotic Sleep Patterns strike again).  But it turns out even a bad buffalo burger is still pretty good….

Neat article from a Canadian producer about our continent’s buffalo/bison heritage.

Why most Indigenous North Americans’ ancestors revered the beast.  Pretty damn useful!  But I’m surprised the National Bison Assn. didn’t produce a basketball-styled “NBA” T-shirt like Rez Dog’s “Native By Ancestry” one!

Have *you* ever heard of this place?!  Another of North America’s best-kept secrets!  Turns out I twice drove past it years ago, unawares….

“Bison bison,” eh?  I can visualize the ad campaign, like “Pizza pizza”!  A few years ago I read that it turns out bison meat may be what the Doctor Upstairs ordered for Native diabetes….

Somebody linked from somewhere up there commented that the pre-Catastrophe environment of most of North America was shaped by buffaloes’ (sp?) munching and trampling of grasses and such (and of course, excreting too – BTW: buffalo-chip jewelry?  Sometimes progress is good!!).  Think about it: their range area stretched from the Appalachians / Alleghenies to the Rockies, and from Sonora to the Northwest Territories – HUGE!  Then Whitey came along and mucked it all up, and now we have weeds out the kazoo….
